| Many characters make up the Mega Man/X series, each one having their own unique characteristics and roles. Read on to find detailed descriptions of each of the main characters from the two series. Please note that the descriptions of each character are from the point where they begin in the series. |

Mega Man
Mega Man is the super robot created by Dr Thomas Light. Originally designed with his partner Roll to be a household robot who worked for Dr Light in their futuristic world, Mega Man volunteered to be converted into a war robot when the evil Dr Wily began to cause havoc in the world and threatened the existence of peace. Once Dr Light converted Mega Man, the world's strongest robot was born. Mega Man's primary role was to defend the world from Dr Wily's evil creations and to bring him to justice. By having a strong heart and an equally strong sense of justice, Mega Man has never let the world down and will fight to the very end to defend the forces of good.

Rush
Rush is Mega Man's K9 buddy. Designed by Dr Light to aid Mega Man, Rush helps Mega Man out by being able to transform into different forms that can greatly assist Mega Man in battle. Rush's abilities and loyalty to Mega Man made them fast friends and have given Rush a vital position in the battle against Dr Wily.

Doctor Thomas Light
Dr Light is the genius behind Mega Man's creation. He has always believed that robots should be at peace with humans, and he has created all his own robots to have their own will in life. Worried for the world's safety against Dr Wily, Dr Light agreed to make Mega Man a fighting robot, and has aided him ever since in Mega Man's quest for peace.

Roll
Roll is Mega Man's robot companion. She was also a household robot until Mega Man became a figting robot, and ever since she has assisted Dr Light in many of his important tasks, and also helps out Mega Man and Rush whenever she can.

Protoman
Protoman is Mega Man's "brother." Also created by Dr Light, Protoman is a fighting robot of similar design to Mega Man, but his high ego and confidence in himself creates friction between their relationship, and Protoman often believes that he is the better of the two, and is always looking for an opportunity to prove this.

Bass
Bass is Mega Man's rival who was created by the evil Dr Wily. Bass has a short temper and is not the most polite robot around, and he often will battle Mega Man to not only defeat him for Dr Wily, but to prove his own strength and superiority. Bass is a strong fighting robot, and although he isn't the friendly type, he does have a sense of justice and a heart somewhere under his metal body.

Doctor Albert Wily
Dr Wily is the evil robot designer of the future world. Ever since he made plans for world domination, he has created numerous amounts of robot armies led by powerful robots in the hope that he can destroy Mega Man and succeed in his plan. His only mistake was to underestimate Mega Man's power, and he is always losing to Mega Man because of this.

Mega Man X
Mega Man X is the first reploid who was discovered in the far-off future by Dr Cain. He was created by Dr Light, but his purpose is unknown. Once he found X, Dr Cain has tried to reproduce X's designs, but has not been able to copy him exactly. Thus he created the Reploids, robots who could live and think for themselves and have feelings. His only mistake was to not see the danger in this and a group of the reploids became infected with a virus which caused them to go maverick. Eventually their army grew so large that X decided that he must destroy them and save mankind. Still confused about his past, X embarks on a journey to defeat the Mavericks and their leader Sigma once and for all. Mega Man X has extremely powerful capabilities and has been designed to fight for freedom and peace.

Zero
Zero is a reploid who has been assigned to the group that is trying to wipe out the mavericks, the Maverick Hunters. He is a powerful reploid and is an effective fighter against the mavericks. Zero and X became fast friends and they now fight together against evil.
Zero's past and creation is also a mystery, but it has been rumored that Zero used to be a maverick and was defeated by Sigma when he lead the Maverick Hunters. Zero was then repaired and reprogrammed to fight for good instead of evil. After some speculation and rumors, it is believed that Zero was created by Dr Wily and that Mega Man X was the original Mega Man that was enhanced by Dr Light and sealed away for thirty years. Dr Wily's purpose for Zero could have been to destroy X, but little is known at this point.

Doctor Thomas Light
Dr Light is the mysterious creator of X who could not live long enough to see his creation in action. His design notes stated that thirty years was required to safely test X's capabilities and reliablity, but his purpose for X is unknown, although whatever it was, part of it was to live a peaceful life and defend the innocent. It is rumoured that Dr Light is the same person that created the original Mega Man and that X is an enhanced version of Mega Man.

Doctor Cain
Dr Cain is the person who found Dr Light's buried lab and uncovered X. He was amazed at X's design, and was determined to replicate Dr Light's plans, thus he created the first reploid. He was blind to the possible danger a reploid would have if it were to become evil, and his worst nightmares came true. Groups of reploids became maverick and were bent on the destruction of the human race. Dr Cain then founded the Maverick Hunters, an elite group of reploids who were designed to track down and disable the mavericks. X and Zero were two of the main leaders of this group.

Sigma
Sigma is the core leader of the Mavericks. Once a Maverick Hunter, Sigma was one of the top fighters of the group. When he was infected by the virus, he gathered many of the strongest Maverick Hunters and used them to create a vast army bent on destruction. He believed that humans were inferior and were slowing the production of reploids, thus they must be eliminated. He could not see why his plans would fail, but Sigma had something in common with Dr Wily, they both underestimated the forces of good. X and Zero had more power than Sigma could imagine, and would not stop until the day the last maverick was destroyed.
